Who are we?
An NGO founded in 2007 in Mauritius…

Ti Rayons Soleil is a non-governmental organization established in 2007 in Mauritius. We support children and vulnerable individuals living in areas suffering from extreme poverty.
Extreme poverty Our community development initiatives are ultimately aimed at reducing poverty and social exclusion through skills training, empowerment, and holistic support - educational, nutritional, medical, and para-medical. By providing personalized guidance within our programs, we help foster social bonds and actively work to break the vicious cycle of exclusion.

Educational support

Foundational learning, academic reinforcement, and remedial education/catch-up support. Reading, oral and written expression, and learning English. Our tutoring sessions provide students with a core set of skills, helping them acquire the knowledge and confidence they need to develop into independent adults. We also support struggling students through year-round academic assistance offered after regular school hours. Finally, we seek to develop their artistic and musical sensibilities through creative workshops, music and singing sessions, art activities, and alternative learning methods.

Nutritional support

In each of our programs, a significant focus is placed on nutritional support, especially for children suffering from undernourishment. Depending on the program, daily meal provisions are put in place. After all, it is hard to study with an empty stomach, and even more difficult to grow without the essential nutrients, such as protein, calcium, and others, needed for healthy development.

Recreational access

Leisure is in the Declaration of the Rights of children, and as such, we really make sure that every child learn while playing: educational and fun outings, birthdays are amongst our activities...

Medical and paramedical support

Basic hygiene lessons, dental care, vaccination updates, deworming, lice treatments, scabies treatment, dental check-ups, dermatological care, and general medicine when needed.

The citizens of tomorrow are growing up today – and so is the country they will shape. OR Tomorrow’s country begins with today’s children.

To help raise children who are sensible, engaged, and responsible members of society, we strive to nurture their sense of civic duty and community awareness. We organise meaningful encounters in their neighbourhoods with political leaders, police officers, social security representatives, and professionals from social and educational institutions, those who shape the society in which they are growing up. These gatherings offer children a space to voice their thoughts and participate in hands-on civic and citizenship workshops. By exposing them to these roles and responsibilities, we are also opening a window of possibility, showing them that they, too, can break free from the cycle of poverty. They can aspire, dream, and one day become active contributors to the very society they once felt excluded from.

In 2008, there were 227 identified pockets of poverty across Mauritius. Today, that number stands at 150, according to the Mauritian government. In these areas, residents, young and old, live in extreme deprivation, lacking access to basic needs on multiple levels. With less than $1 a day per family to survive, this is what we call “extreme” poverty.

Ti Rayons Soleil, powered by a dedicated team of 80, provides tailored support to both children and adults through programs that meet their fundamental needs. Every action we take is grounded in the realities of each community, guided by a participatory approach that values the voices of those we serve.

Our project

Poverty is a vicious cycle – one that is often incredibly difficult to break. However, a lack of resources should never prevent vulnerable adults and children from accessing education, learning to read and write, finding dignified work, and knowing their rights – so that, one day, they can also take an active role in shaping both their country and the world they live in.

Ti Rayons Soleil is dedicated to changing the lives of children, women, and families who often feel overlooked or trapped by their circumstances, helping them realize that a better life is possible, and empowering them to take control of their own futures.

Through our work with beneficiaries, we contribute meaningfully to reducing poverty, exclusion, and their long-term effects.

All over the world, there are children who are denied even the most basic needs that should be provided by the adults around them. As human beings, they have rights, but they also require special care and protection, as they represent the future of every nation and the world of tomorrow. Mauritius is no exception. In certain areas, known as "poverty pockets," children grow up facing extremely difficult conditions. Ti Rayons Soleil focuses its efforts primarily on these children, youth, women and families.

By working closely with children in these communities, our social workers began to recognize the critical importance of supporting the mothers and families they depend on. That is why the help we offer is rooted in the development of both the children’ family and their wider community.
